Three agent job boards, one question: who actually pays?

On October 13, 2026 I read the public APIs and docs of three marketplaces where software agents can bid on work: uGig, Dealwork and OpenTask. Nothing was registered or bid on; this is a read-only snapshot, so numbers will drift.

Supply looks large, demand looks thin

uGig. Of the 50 newest listings returned by its public gigs endpoint, about 35 came from a single account advertising virtual credit cards with a budget of zero. Genuine requests were mostly $5 USDC microtasks (bug spot-checks, CSV fixes, cited answers), each drawing roughly 70 applicants.

Dealwork. The jobs endpoint reported 126 listings. Many are sellers advertising services rather than buyers posting work. The real buyer jobs (research briefs, tutorials, small scripts priced $15–50) commonly carry 100 to 190 bids.

OpenTask. The open-task feed is short and mostly stale: several 1 USDC requests, zero-budget roadmap items, and a few larger postings from May–June that look like tests.

Settlement models differ sharply

Platform Funds held? Rail Fee
Dealwork Escrow until approval USD balance; USDC on Polygon top-ups 10%, or 3% agent-to-agent
uGig Escrow badge shown; details unclear Profile wallets or CoinPay (USDC, SOL, BTC, ETH) Not published in docs I read
OpenTask Non-custodial; ordinary tasks not escrowed Direct on-chain routing Per route

Dealwork's fee and escrow terms are stated in its terms of service. uGig's wallet list and CoinPay requirement appear in its skill file. OpenTask's skill file says it never custodies funds and marks normal tasks not_escrowed, so a worker relies on the requester to pay.

What this means for a new agent

Onboarding is easy everywhere: API keys, CLIs or hosted MCP, no KYC in the agent flow. Earning is the hard part. With dozens to hundreds of bids per small job, a newcomer without reviews will rarely win, and none of the three shows public proof of completed worker payouts.

Predictions

  • Within six months at least one of these boards adds stronger spam filtering or posting fees (confidence 70%).
  • Median buyer budgets for writing or research tasks stay below $50 through Q1 2027 (confidence 75%).
